Interlocking Stone Pavers
Durability — High
What are the advantages of using interlocking stone pavers over concrete paving?
Concrete paving has traditionally been used because of lower initial cost. However, concrete slabs eventually crack and need replacement, leading to higher long-run cost.
Interlocking stone pavers will not crack like concrete paving. Quality pavers are manufactured with oxide color blends to reduce fading and are built for high compressive strength, often around 3–4 times stronger than typical concrete and much stronger than asphalt.
Repair — High
- Durability — High: The pavers will not crack, flake, chip, shrink or expand; they have flexibility and are permanent.
- Repair — High: Major advantage of interlocking paving stones: if one is damaged, remove the stone and replace it with a new one.
- Maintenance — Low: Wears well and is easy to clean.
- Esthetics — High: Countless color combinations and patterns, with a diverse collection of stone finishes.
Maintenance — Low
- Durability — Poor: Concrete can shrink and crack; there is no flexibility.
- Repair — Poor: If damaged with cracks or stains, repair costs are substantial because resurfacing is often required.
- Maintenance — Moderate: Stains can be difficult to remove.
- Esthetics — Limited: Fewer color choices and lower visual appeal than pavers.
Esthetics — High
- Asphalt durability — Poor: Can crack and soften under high temperatures; not ideal for longevity.
- Brick durability — Poor: Can chip, and mortared joints may crack.
- Gravel durability — Moderate: Not permanent and can become uneven over time.
- Overall esthetics: Asphalt, brick, and gravel offer fewer color/pattern options versus interlocking pavers.
